January’s Wine Tasting Notes

Gilbert Cellars   |   Estate Chardonnay   |  2008  |  Wahluke Slope AVA $17 (special retail price) / $28 reg

The Gilbert Family has been farming in the Yakima Valley since 1897, growing over  the years into the production of grapes and eventual their on winery.  This Estate grown Chardonnay from the Doc Stewart Vineyard is aged in 45 % new french oak.  The wine is aged ‘Sur Lie’ or with the lees for10 months, giving it a full, round mouth feel.  This treatment brings a subtle oak, spice, toast and olive in the nose of the wine.  A chardonnay with complexity, richness and drink ability.

Grape Varietal:  100 % Estate Chardonnay

Tasting Note:   The nose is filled with oak notes, and a slight toasty olive present in the background.  The palette is green apples, vanilla, unripe pear.  Full and rich body is complex, with a slight cream.  Beautiful late acid cleans the long finish of this wine. Fermented in 100 % French Oak of which 45 % was new.

Gilbert Cellars   |   Allobroges   |  2007  |  Columbia Valley AVA $20 (special retail price) / $33 reg

‘Allobroges’ is the name of a Celtic Tribe that lived in the Rhone Valley of France for which this wine is named.  This Rhone blend showcases the best of the Red Rhone varietals grown in the state, Syrah, Mourvedre, and Grenache.  This classic styled wine is lush, earthy, rich, and approachable.   In this vintage the Syrah and Grenache is toned down bringing out the earthy notes of the Mourvedre.  This wine has something for everyone.

Grape Varietal:  55 % Syrah, 31 % Mourvedre, 14 % Grenache

Tasting Note:   A big nose of violet, plum, date, and a very subtle smoke.  The aroma is big and deep.  The fruit comes out in the mouth with tart cherry, plum, deep red fruit.  The earthy notes are carried through the palette with decadent tannins.  The finish is less fruit and more earth and spice.  A round, soft acid is the last impression.

Winemaker’s Note:   The fruit is sourced from three different vineyards from the Columbia Valley.

Gilbert Cellars   |   Left Bank    |  2008  |  Wahluke Slope AVA $20 (special retail price) / $33 reg

Another Estate wine from Gilbert Cellars Wahluke Slope vineyards.  This left bank wine (Cabernet Sauvignon being the predominate grape) is full of big cherry Cabernet flavor.  A complex blend of 5 grapes that are well balanced showing the characteristics of each varietal.  A big glass that is layered with black and red fruit leaving no doubt that this is a Cabernet heavy wine.  The other grapes blended in give the wine a well balanced package of big herbs, texture, richness, and spice under the big fruit.  Fire up the grill!

Grape Varietal:  58 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 15 % Cabernet Franc, 12 % Petit Verdot, 5 % Merlot, 5 % Malbec

Tasting Note:   The nose is all cherry: dark cherry, tart cherry, red cherry, it’s all there.  Some blueberry, flower and a touch of moist soil.  The palette has the big cherry up front but laced with mocha, coffee grounds, white pepper, and a light brine.  The finish pulls up a spice note with the tannins before bright acid pops.  Great structure for such a big, young wine.

Gilbert Cellars   |   Cabernet Sauvignon   |  2007  |  Wahluke Slope AVA $28 (special retail price) / $47 reg

Another wine from the Gilbert Cellars portfolio that is from their estate vineyards on the Wahluke Slope.  Not as big as the Gilbert’s ‘Left Bank’ Cabernet blend, this wine is more elegant with the use of 100 % Cabernet Sauvignon.  The cherry is there but layered with blackberries, blueberries, all with a jammy quality.  Deep purple in color, inky with big legs this is New World Cabernet.   Deep and rich but still restrained for Washington Cabernet.  A beautifully made wine.

Grape Varietal:  100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Tasting Note:   The aromas of ripe red and black fruit, violets, toast, and baking spices.  The mouth feel is rich, with the fruit jammy and red.  Forest floor and oak pops with the acid on the finish.  Very late soft acid.

Don’t forget! Our fun with Gilbert Cellars doesn’t stop there-  Save the date for our February 26th Splash! Wine Makers Dinner. We will be featuring 3 of the 4 wines that will be tasted at the Neighborhood Wine Tasting, as well as a special Wine Makers Diner exclusive Gilbert Cellars Malbec. $89 per person (excluding tax and gratuity).
